This Pichwai painting by Suresh Kumar Kumawat is composed as a horizontal devotional scene, with Srinathji occupying the central section and groups of Gopis arranged on either side.
Pichwai painting is a devotional textile tradition that developed in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, in association with the Pushtimarg worship of Shrinathji. Literally meaning “that which hangs behind,” pichwais were originally large painted cloths hung behind the deity in the temple sanctum to create a sacred backdrop for darshan.
At the centre is Shrinathji in his characteristic Govardhan posture, with his left hand raised above his head as though lifting Mount Govardhan, while his right hand rests upon his waist. His body is rendered in a deep blue complexion and his frontal face has a calm, meditative expression. His large, elongated almond-shaped eyes are half-closed, with finely arched brows, a straight and delicate nose, softly rounded cheeks and small, well-defined lips. A prominent Vaishnava tilak marks his forehead.
Srinathji’s face is framed by an elaborate mor mukut, richly worked with pearls, floral ornaments and peacock feathers. His ears are adorned with elaborate earrings, while layers of necklaces, pearl strands and floral garlands cover his chest. His richly patterned garments combine cream, red, orange, green and gold, with fine floral and geometric detailing. The extensive jewellery and textile ornamentation make his figure particularly luminous against the dark background.
The central deity is enclosed within a rectangular shrine-like frame, whose borders are densely ornamented with floral and geometric designs. Around the shrine are prasad and decorative elements, further distinguishing Srinathji’s sacred space from the surrounding landscape.
On either side of Srinathji are groups of Gopis, arranged in a near-mirrored configuration. They are shown in profile, facing inward towards the deity, with their arms raised in graceful gestures of devotion and dance. Their elongated figures and carefully arranged postures create a sense of movement directed towards Srinathji.
The Gopis are richly dressed in layered ghagras, cholis and veils, predominantly in shades of cream, red, orange and green. Their garments are covered with delicate floral, dotted and geometric patterns, while their jewellery includes necklaces, earrings, bangles and elaborate hair ornaments. Although their overall arrangement mirrors one another, the individual details of their garments and gestures vary, preventing the composition from becoming entirely repetitive.
The landscape surrounding the figures is characterised by large stylised green leaves and flowering plants, which extend horizontally towards the central shrine. Their elongated forms create a visual connection between the Gopis and Srinathji, while also evoking the lush pastoral environment associated with Krishna’s sacred landscape.
The deep blue background is filled with repeated white floral motifs. Alongside these flowers are clusters of white circular dots, creating a striking celestial, night-sky-like atmosphere. The patterned ground functions almost like a textile surface, allowing the figures and vegetation to emerge prominently from it. Small decorative and narrative elements are also dispersed throughout the background.
The painting is enclosed within a broad floral border, composed of a continuous vine of white flowers and leaves against the dark ground. The border runs around the entire horizontal composition and provides a strong visual enclosure. Its repeated floral rhythm echoes the smaller white blossoms scattered across the central field, creating continuity between the frame and the pictorial space.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
