This Pichwai painting by Suresh Kumar Kumawat presents Lord Shrinathji in the Govardhan-lifting posture at the centre of a richly ornamented shrine-like composition. Pichwai painting is a devotional textile tradition that developed in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, in association with the Pushtimarg worship of Shrinathji. Literally meaning “that which hangs behind,” pichwais were originally large painted cloths hung behind the deity in the temple sanctum to create a sacred backdrop for darshan, characterised by frontal symmetry, elaborate shringara, ritual settings and Krishna’s pastoral imagery.
Shrinathji is depicted frontally with a deep blue complexion, his raised left arm holding the symbolic Govardhan mountain while his right hand rests near his waist. He is dressed in an elaborate golden poshak, with a richly patterned garment, a long garland and multiple layers of necklaces. A prominent golden mor mukut (peacock-feather headdress) crowns his head, while armlets, bracelets, rings and anklets further emphasise his richly adorned form. His serene, half-closed eyes and Urdhva Pundra mark reinforce the devotional character of the image. There is Jal Daani and Prasad kept near his feet.
The central figure is surrounded by smaller representations of Shrinathji, creating a layered sacred setting. These figures repeat the deity’s characteristic iconography while varying in posture and attributes. Behind them is a deep blue textile-like ground covered with a dense, repetitive floral pattern in yellow and red, framed by bands of geometric and floral ornament.
The lower section focuses on ritual offerings to Shrinathji. Several smaller representations of the deity are seated on ceremonial platforms, surrounded by an extensive arrangement of vessels and food offerings. At the centre is a large mound of rice, topped with a round sweet, while numerous bowls and containers are arranged symmetrically around it, representing the abundance associated with Chhappan Bhog.
Two priests (mukhiya ji) flank the offering arrangement. Both are shown in profile, dressed in yellow dhotis and adorned with jewellery and tilak. The priest on the left carries an aarti thali, while the priest on the right holds a peacock-feather fan, suggesting the performance of ritual worship and service to the deity.
The entire scene is enclosed within multiple decorative borders, with a striking red outer ground and intricate floral and geometric patterns. The careful symmetry, repetition of Shrinathji’s image, elaborate ornamentation and emphasis on ritual offerings are characteristic of the Pichwai tradition, in which paintings serve as devotional images associated with the worship of Shrinathji.

Returns and Replacements
