This Tanjore painting of Lord Ganesha, attributed to Sheratone Antique Arts, is a vibrant example of the traditional South Indian style, of Tanjore Paintings, characterised by its opulent decoration in gold embossing, precious stones and gems and three-dimensional effect.
The central figure is the elephant-headed god Lord Ganesha, seated regally in Lalitasana on a majestic lotus base, which symbolises purity and creation. Lord Ganesha is rendered in a rich golden-yellow skin tone and is framed by an elaborate, deeply carved golden arch that mimics a temple sanctuary. He is lavishly adorned with high-relief gesso work and gold foil on his crown, jewellery, and clothing.
His four hands display classic iconography: the upper right hand holds a Pasha (noose) and the upper left holds an Ankusha (elephant goad). The lower right hand is held up in the protective Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness and protection), and the lower left hand holds offerings. The small figure of his vehicle, the Mooshika (mouse), is clearly visible at the bottom of the throne base, completing the powerful image of the Remover of Obstacles.
