About the Artwork +
This Madhubani painting by Pratima Bharti is a striking representation of Ardhanareeswara, the composite androgynous form of the Hindu deities Shiva and Parvati. Rendered in the vibrant Bharni style of the Mithila tradition, the work uses a dense application of color and intricate patterns to illustrate one of the most profound philosophical concepts in Indian iconography.
Ardhanareeswara is a combination of three words “Ardha,” “Nari,” and “Ishwara” means “half,” “woman,” and “lord,” respectively, which when combined means the lord whose half is a woman. It is believed that the God is Lord Shiva and the woman part is his consort Goddess Parvati or Shakti. The seed of this creation is the perfect conjugal union of Shiva and Parvati, the symbols of domestic bliss, asceticism and destruction. It conveys the unity of opposites in the universe. The male half stands for Purusha (pure consciousness) and the female half is Prakriti (nature or creative energy). Ardhnarishwar is complete because the Masculine experiences Feminine by being physically fused with it and vice versa. It also symbolizes attunement with your own feminine/masculine angles. Together, they are at once the symbol of individual perfection and the magnificent harmony that a compatible wedding brings.
In this depiction, the figure is split vertically down the center to show the seamless integration of the two deities. The Shiva half, on the proper right, is shown with blue skin, a characteristic trait of his Neelkanth form. He wears a tiger-skin wrap, rendered here with a vibrant orange and black flame-like pattern. His two arms on this side hold his traditional attributes, including the Trishula (trident) positioned to the far left. A crescent moon adorns his dark hair, signifying his role as the master of time. The Parvati half, on the proper left, is shown with a fair, peach-colored complexion. She is draped in a rich green and red sari, adorned with delicate floral buti patterns and geometric borders. Her jewelry, including the heavy bangles and the nose ring (nath), emphasizes her role as the ideal householder and the embodiment of beauty.
The central figure is set against a background brimming with Mithila symbolism. Two large peacocks, symbols of love and grace, frame the upper corners, their plumage rendered in deep purple and green. The surrounding space is filled with stylized blossoms and swirling vines, representing the life-force of Prakriti. The entire composition is enclosed within a multi-layered border featuring a rhythmic Singada (water chestnut) pattern in red, blue, and yellow, which anchors the divine energy of the central form. Pratima Bharti’s mastery of fine linework and balanced color ensures that while the composition is dense, every element remains distinct and contributes to the overall harmony of the piece.
