This Madhubani painting by Pratima Bharti is a masterful example of the Katchni style, which emphasizes intricate linework and rhythmic patterns over the use of solid color. The composition features two monkeys facing each other, rendered with a playful energy beneath a dense canopy of trees.
The entire canvas is activated with a high density of patterns. The bodies of the monkeys are meticulously filled with fine hatching and cross-hatching, creating a sense of volume and texture that differentiates their forms from the surrounding environment. Above and around them, several peacocks and other birds are depicted, their plumes and feathers detailed with repetitive scalloped lines and small dots, which are characteristic of the Mithila tradition.
The background is defined by a web-like structure of dark, tapering branches. These branches are not left plain but are filled with internal linear strokes, giving the entire landscape an organic, vibrating energy. The use of a monochromatic palette—primarily black ink on an off-white base—allows the viewer to focus entirely on the technical precision of the artist’s hand and the complexity of the mark-making.
The narrative is enclosed within a multi-layered border. The inner frame consists of delicate parallel lines, while the outer border features a rhythmic, saw-tooth pattern in yellow and red. This structured boundary provides a formal contrast to the flowing, complex details of the interior scene, centering the monkeys and birds as part of a sacred, living forest.

Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance. Traditionally created by women on walls and floors during auspicious occasions, these paintings depict Hindu mythology, nature, folklore, and daily life, often incorporating Hindu deities, scenes from epics, and natural motifs like flowers and animals.
