About the Artwork +
This frame by Dolon Kundu is a sophisticated example of contemporary Indian terracotta art, organized as a set of circular relief plates. Known for her ability to push the boundaries of traditional clay work, she often focuses on the intricate beauty of the natural world, transforming the raw, earthy medium of terracotta into a delicate tapestry of flora and fauna. She is one of the few female pinch potters in India, carrying the legacy of terracotta art forward using the pinch pottery technique.
The set consists of multiple circular plates of varying sizes, arranged in a deliberate, spiraling arc across a deep blue textured surface. This layout creates a sense of organic movement, as if the floral motifs are drifting or growing across a cosmic or aquatic field. The contrast between the warm, unglazed ochre of the clay and the cool, dark background emphasizes the three-dimensional quality of the relief work. Each plate is a dense microcosm of botanical life. The relief is exceptionally high, with individual petals, leaves, and stems layered to create a realistic sense of depth. The larger plates feature expansive clusters of flowers and foliage. The artist uses a variety of textures, from the smooth surfaces of blooming petals to the serrated edges of leaves and the rougher, pitted details of the floral centers. Positioned toward the center of the spiral, the smaller plates act as focal points, featuring more compact but equally detailed floral arrangements that anchor the overall rhythm of the piece.
Kundu’s technique involves meticulous hand-modeling and the use of fine tools to carve and shape the wet clay before it is fired. The uniformity of the firing process is evident in the consistent, warm tone across all plates, highlighting the natural beauty of the terracotta. The artist allows the play of light and shadow over the raised surfaces to define the forms, giving the work a tactile, grounded energy.
