About the Artwork +

This exquisite Ashtalakshmi Pattachitra painting by National Award-winning artist Gitanjali Das is a masterful tribute to the eight manifestations of Goddess Lakshmi. Rooted in the ancient temple traditions of Odisha, this work captures the complete divine collective of prosperity, with each form of the Goddess meticulously detailed within its own sacred architectural space. The artwork is structured in a symmetrical grid against a deep celestial blue background, where each manifestation is seated gracefully upon a fully bloomed lotus. These goddesses are framed by meticulous arched toranas (gateways), symbolizing purity and divine hospitality, and are adorned with elaborate gold jewelry and ornate headdresses rendered with the fine brushwork characteristic of the Pattachitra tradition.

The composition comprehensively depicts the eight specific forms of wealth required for a fulfilled life - Adi Lakshmi, the primordial source of all life; Dhana Lakshmi, the bestower of material wealth and gold; Dhanya Lakshmi, who represents agricultural abundance and sustenance; Gaja Lakshmi, the goddess of power and royalty flanked by elephants; Sanatana Lakshmi, who represents the wealth of family and lineage; Veera Lakshmi (or Dhairya Lakshmi) provides the courage and strength to overcome life's obstacles; Vidya Lakshmi, the goddess of knowledge and wisdom, and Vijaya Lakshmi, who ensures victory and success in all endeavors.

Every inch of this painting is enriched with auspicious motifs, including delicate white dot patterns and intricate floral borders that enhance the divine grandeur of the scene. The goddesses hold their symbolic attributes—such as conch shells, pots of gold, and lotus buds—signifying their unique roles in bestowing well-being upon the world. Through a harmonious blend of vibrant natural colors and rhythmic linework, Gitanjali Das brings alive a spiritual aura, making this piece a timeless sacred narrative of culture and a visual celebration of the eightfold path to prosperity.

Gitanjali Das

Gitanjali Das
Gitanjali Das is a National Award-winning Pattachitra artist from Dandasahi village, Puri, Odisha, who began her artistic journey at age ten, mastering the traditional painting style under Guru Shri Arjun Maharana. She extends her artistry to materials like tassar silk and is dedicated to promoting Pattachitra, viewing her work as a devotional service to spread the spiritual and traditional values of Jagannath culture. Her achievements include participation in the Janapada Indigenous Art Workshop Series and features in Asian Art London and the Deccan Herald. Following her husband's passing, she is committed to restoring the temple artistic tradition and preserving Jagannath culture, advocating for artist support to ensure the survival and value of this ancient art form.

Pattachitra

Pattachitra, a timeless folk art from Odisha and Bengal, is characterized by its meticulous linework, vibrant natural colors, and mythological storytelling, often depicting tales from Hindu epics and dedicated to Lord Jagannath. Originating over a thousand years ago, with strong ties to the 12th-century Jagannath temple in Puri, this art form utilizes traditional techniques, including canvases made from treated cotton cloth, natural pigments derived from shells, soot, turmeric, and cinnabar, and fine brushes made from animal hair. Its cultural and religious significance is profound, integral to festivals like Rath Yatra and serving as a vital livelihood for artisan families, with variations including Jagannath, Radha Krishna, and Durga Pattachitra, as well as palm leaf and wall paintings.
