This striking Chhau mask by master artisan Dharmendra Sutradhar interprets the protective motifs of Kirtimukha and Nazarbattu, designed to ward off evil eyes and negative energy. Crafted using traditional Purulia Chhau papier-mâché mask-making techniques, the piece presents a fierce, apotropaic demon face filled with bold colors and gilded ornamentation.
The mask features a deep midnight-blue face defined by wide, bulging eyes with bright red pupils, a nose ring, and a curlicue mustache outlined in metallic gold. A row of sharp white teeth lines the upper jaw, while a vibrant red tongue extends downward, painted with a gold scorpion motif matching those rendered on the bright red horns flanking the head. At the center of the forehead sits a medallion featuring a sun-like face with a tilak, echoed by two matching circular ear discs framing the cheeks.
Linear gold strokes define the brows, eyelids, lips, and outer borders, giving the fierce expression a sculptured, ceremonial quality. The contrast between deep blue, vibrant red, crisp white, and gold linework creates an intense visual energy characteristic of traditional Bengali folk crafts.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.

No, we currently sell artworks unframed (unless explicitly mentioned otherwise) and do not provide framing services.
