This contemporary Gond painting by renowned master artist Venkat Shyam offers a groundbreaking, structural reinterpretation of the traditional Tree of Life motif. Gond art is a sacred tribal art form originating from the Pardhan Gond community of Madhya Pradesh, historically created to honor nature, spirits, and the sacred interconnections of the cosmos through fine line work, repetitive micro-patterns, and vibrant storytelling.
In this work, Venkat Shyam intentionally disrupts the fluid, organic silhouette of the traditional tree of life. This symmetrical structure fragments the sprawling branches, inviting the viewer to engage with each golden panel as a self-contained artwork while maintaining harmony within the grander composition. Within the intricate, spiraling yellow branches, the artist weaves modern human life alongside traditional tribal lore. Entwined in the foliage are vivid depictions of human figures, cars, bicycles, houses, birds, and flora, all rendered using signature Gond fine-line fill patterns.
This composition beautifully depicts Venkat Raman Singh Shyam's signature patterns, including "lahrdaar" or "choppy waves," featuring broad diagonal shaded bands separated by narrow, undulating black-and-white stripes and “concentric half circles”.The Lahrdaar are stripes, generally recognized as "lahr" (waves) and "lahrdaar" (choppy waves), infusing his art with dynamic movement. He also draws inspiration from two powerful symbols: the Concentric half circles, also his signature pattern and bindu, representing the surrounding half-moon and the supreme god which also symbolizes his village and community. These elements are the cornerstone of his distinctive style, one he believes shares commonalities with the works of renowned artists like Dali and Picasso.
By embedding artifacts of modern civilization into the sacred limbs of the tree, the piece explores how contemporary human existence remains fundamentally rooted in and supported by the natural world.
