This is a beautful Gond painting by artist Venkat Shyam, depicting the plant called Mahua (Madhuca longifolia), illustrating its connection to the vitality, longevity and continuity of life. He beautifully captures nature and its various forms of vegetation, delineating the piece in cultural and tribal roots.
Gond art is a traditional form of expression originating from the Indian subcontinent, particularly flourishing in the central region of India, especially in Madhya Pradesh. Historically, this art was practised on the walls and floors of dwellings, serving to celebrate and reflect the symbolic and cultural essence of local communities. Artists employ a variety of geometric patterns comprised of dots, lines, spirals and other shapes to create intricate and repetitive designs that embody the vibrancy of tribal life.
In this painting, Mahua takes centre stage. The symmetry and verticality of the tree enhance the overall composition, as it rises from the bottom edge of the canvas. The thick, dense trunk, rendered in rich black shades, supports its sprawling branches. The leaves, in vibrant hues of yellow, orange and blue, symbolise the circle of life, representing different phases and experiences.
There is a sense of stillness infused with movement in the painting. A fascinating detail is the caterpillar ascending the trunk, highlighting the intricate relationship between life forms and nature. It emphasises that no creature can survive in isolation. Additionally, the composition features a small, partially framed expanse of long grasses or plants, which symbolises the colours of life and the beginning stages of existence.
This composition beautifully depicts Venkat Raman Singh Shyam's signature patterns, including "lahrdaar" or "choppy waves," featuring broad diagonal shaded bands separated by narrow, undulating black-and-white stripes and “concentric half circles”.The Lahrdaar are stripes, generally recognized as "lahr" (waves) and "lahrdaar" (choppy waves), infusing his art with dynamic movement. He also draws inspiration from two powerful symbols: the Concentric half circles, also his signature pattern and bindu, representing the surrounding half-moon and the supreme god which also symbolizes his village and community. These elements are the cornerstone of his distinctive style, one he believes shares commonalities with the works of renowned artists like Dali and Picasso.
Overall, Venkat Shyam's artwork masterfully weaves together elements of colour, form and symbolism. This painting invites viewers to reflect on the beauty of nature and the importance of preserving the delicate balance of life.
