This Gond painting by Kailash Pradhan depicts a fantastical hybrid creature combining attributes of fish, serpent, and terrestrial animal, its elongated S-shaped body emerging from rippling water and encircling smaller life forms, plants, and blossoms to evoke the interconnected continuum of land, water, and living beings.
Originating in the tribal Gond community, which lives in close communion with nature, these paintings portray a strong belief that every aspect of nature is animate and sacred.
The creature’s sweeping, serpentine curve suggests fluid motion between realms, bridging aquatic and terrestrial spaces. Its body is segmented into patterned zones rendered through scalloped scales, cross-hatched grids, and dense star-like dots that create tactile rhythm across the surface. The large orange head, with its alert circular eye and fin-like ears, merges piscine and mammalian features, while the tapering tail dissolves into the surrounding water, reinforcing transformation and continuity. A smaller companion creature rests within the curve of the body, echoing form and colour, suggesting lineage or ecological coexistence.
The surrounding environment situates the hybrid within a living ecosystem: stylised aquatic plants rise from the water’s edge, while a blooming flower stands on land, visually linking vegetal and animal life. The layered blue waves beneath anchor the composition in a fluid ground, against which the green and orange body glows in chromatic contrast. Through this integration of forms, the painting dissolves categorical boundaries between species and habitats.
This painting showcases three of Kailash Pradhan’s signature styles, the unique star-shaped pattern called “Cher Chera,” inspired by the Gond community’s Cherchera festival; the Parsa Paan pattern resembling betel leaves, offered as a symbol of respect at significant events and used in traditional medicine within the Gond tribe; and the Khaddar pattern inspired by the fibres of handspun Khadi cotton cloth.
Through its hybrid anatomy and looping composition, the creature becomes an emblem of ecological unity—an imaginative being that embodies the Gond worldview of nature as an indivisible, animated whole where water, land, plant, and animal life continuously interrelate.

Returns and Replacements
We offer replacements or repairs if your artwork arrives damaged or has a quality issue. As each artwork is handcrafted, we do not accept returns or refunds for orders received in the expected condition.
Delivery Timeline
Ready To Ship/In Stock artworks are shipped in 3-4 days. We only accept return requests for Ready to Ship/In stock artworks placed within a week from date of delivery. However, no returns can be accepted for international deliveries.
