Rogan art is an ancient and unique textile painting form originating from the Kutch region of Gujarat, India, with a history spanning over 300 years and believed to have Persian roots. This intricate craft involves boiling castor oil to create a thick paste, which is then mixed with natural pigments. Artisans from the Muslim Khatri community in Nirona village use a metal stylus called a "kalam" to freehand draw vibrant and detailed designs, often inspired by nature, folklore, and traditional Indian motifs, on cotton or silk fabric. The painstaking process involves twisting threads of color at body temperature to create a distinctive 3D effect. After facing the risk of disappearance, Rogan art has experienced a resurgence, gaining international attention after an artwork was presented to former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2014.
