Santosh Uikey Top Artist

Santosh Uikey, a passionate Gond artist from Patangarh, Madhya Pradesh, has dedicated his life to preserving and promoting his tribe's rich cultural heritage through vibrant paintings. Inspired by his mother, he began painting in childhood, later establishing an art group for handicapped girls. Though without formal awards, his talent is recognized, notably through a collaboration with Japanese artists on a Narmada River project, where he infused Gond stories and songs into his work. Uikey's art, characterized by nature's hues and village culture, vividly portrays daily Gond life, traditions, rituals, and folklore on diverse mediums like wood, walls, and textiles. Despite challenges, he remains committed to his art, aspiring to international exhibitions and authoring a book on tribal culture.

What is Gond Art ?

Gond art is a vibrant and mesmerizing tribal art form originating from the Gond community of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is deeply rooted in nature, folklore, and spirituality, characterized by intricate patterns, rich colors, fine detailing, and repetitive designs. Gond paintings often depict motifs inspired by nature, such as trees, animals, birds, and aquatic life, narrating tribal myths and daily life. Historically painted on mud walls and huts, it has evolved to be created on paper and canvas, using natural pigments or modern acrylics, with a distinctive technique of sketching outlines and filling them with intricate patterns, dots, and lines. This art form serves as cultural storytelling, celebrates nature worship, and provides economic empowerment for indigenous artists, bridging ancient traditions with contemporary artistic expression.
