About the Artwork +

This vibrant painting by Uttam Chitrakar is a compelling contemporary rendition of Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu deity of wealth, fortune, and prosperity, executed in the Kalighat style. Developed in the 19th century near the Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, this art form is celebrated for its bold, sweeping brushwork and rhythmic shading, and theatrical elements that Chitrakar uses here to imbue the goddess with a sense of graceful volume and divine presence.

At the center of the composition, Goddess Lakshmi is depicted in a regal seated posture, her form draped in a traditional red sari adorned with fine, rhythmic black pleats. Her skin is rendered in a warm, fair tone, and her face bears the characteristic Kalighat features: large, almond-shaped eyes that extend toward the temples and a serene, slight smile. She wears an ornate golden crown and jewelry, and in her hands, she holds a sacred pot (Kalash), a symbol of abundance and life-giving energy.

Flanking the goddess are two majestic white owls, her traditional vahana or divine mounts. These owls are rendered with soft blue-and-white stippled plumage and large, watchful eyes, topped with decorative golden crests consistent with Kalighat's stylised visual vocabulary. The minimalist, pale yellow background ensures that the viewer's attention remains entirely on the divine trio, while the bold black border provides a crisp, modern frame to the traditional subject matter. Uttam Chitrakar’s work serves as a beautiful bridge between ancestral folk idioms and a living spiritual imagination, capturing the benevolent essence of the Goddess of Wealth.

Kalighat

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
