About the Artwork +
This grand Pichwai painting by master artist Shehzaad Ali Sherani ji presents a panoramic and multifaceted vision of Sharad Purnima, centered around Shrinathji amidst a lush landscape, surrounded by gopis and cows. Rooted deeply in the Vaishnava tradition and originating from Nathdwara in Rajasthan, Pichwai paintings are revered as sacred backdrops, particularly in temples dedicated to Shrinathji, a beloved manifestation of Krishna, at the age of seven.
The central and largest panel features Shrinathji in his iconic posture with his left arm raised, symbolic of Govardhan Leela (lifting of the Mount Govardhan). His form is rendered in deep blue, adorned with opulent golden ornaments, layers of pearl necklaces, and a magnificent crown. He stands within an elaborate golden shrine, radiating divine presence. Flanking him, gopis in an array of vibrantly colored garments, including shades of pink, orange, green, and yellow, dance gracefully with raised hands, signifying their ecstatic participation in a divine 'leela' or pastime. Below them, a peacock is elegantly poised, and the foreground features Kamal Talai, or blooming lotus flowers.
Below the main scene, a serene pastoral setting unfolds, teeming with white cows, adorned with orange henna imprints, symbolic of the divine touch of Shri Krishna, grazing and congregating amidst lush green fields. They are attended by cowherds, dressed in traditional attire. The entire lower section is bordered by a delicate band of pink and white lotus blossoms and green foliage. Above the central tableau, the night sky is depicted in deep blue with a luminous full moon and twinkling stars, suggesting a nocturnal celebration. Chandra Dev, or the Moon god, is surrounded by numerous deities who have come to witness the divine moment. Numerous smaller panels frame the top and sides of the painting, each showcasing the different Shringars of Shrinathji.
These miniature vignettes, rendered in a bright palette of red, yellow, blue, and green, highlight the multifaceted nature of the divine. The outermost border of the entire composition depicts floral and geometric patterns in deep green, pink, and gold, reinforcing the ceremonial and sacred essence of the artwork. This extensive Pichwai, with its rich storytelling, intricate detailing, and serene yet vibrant palette, offers a profound spiritual immersion, embodying devotion, abundance, and the eternal play of the divine.
