About the Artwork +
This Kalighat painting by Uttam Chitrakar is a beautiful example of the 19th-century folk art style that originated near the Kali Temple in Kolkata. Known for its bold outlines, sweeping brushstrokes and satirical or religious themes, Kalighat art was historically created on mill-made paper to be sold as affordable souvenirs to pilgrims and urban dwellers. While the composition mirrors the dense narratives of textile traditions, Uttam Chitrakar’s hand brings the fluid, expressive energy characteristic of the Bengal Patuas to this expansive scene.
The composition is bisected diagonally by a vibrant blue river, a common motif representing the life-giving waters of the Ganges. Within this river, a bustling aquatic ecosystem unfolds, featuring fishermen in traditional boats and a variety of aquatic creatures like crocodiles and fishes. Unlike the static icons of other traditions, these figures are rendered with the characteristic Kalighat "shading" along the edges, which uses a wash of color to provide a sense of rounded volume and fluid movement. This technique allows the fish and crocodiles to appear as if they are truly submerged and navigating the currents.
Above and below the river, the terrestrial world is depicted as a dense, harmonious thicket of animal life. The upper section features a grand procession of elephants, horses, deer, tigers, cow and various forest creatures, all rendered with the rhythmic, curvaceous lines that define the Kalighat style. Below the river, powerful crocodiles and other land animals emerge from the depths. Each creature is a study in form, using minimal yet expressive strokes to capture the "shakti" or vital energy of the animal kingdom without the need for rigid anatomical realism.
Uttam Chitrakar’s mastery is further evident in the treatment of the flora and the overall color palette. On the left and right, large, flowering trees serve as a sanctuary for peacocks and smaller birds, its leaves and blossoms rendered as bold, flat washes of color that emphasize organic silhouettes. The work utilizes a traditional palette of indigo blue, earth reds, and charcoal blacks, often accented with silver or tin white highlights to give the water and the animals' eyes a luminous quality. The entire narrative is enclosed within a sophisticated border of repeated gold blossoms, anchoring the dynamic, diagonal energy of the central scene into a structured, sacred vision.
