This framed Koftgiri piece by artist Shyamlata Gahlot is a masterful preservation of Udaipur’s royal weaponry tradition. The work features a Khanjar (dagger) characterized by its traditional curved blade and an elegantly tapered hilt, meticulously inlaid with pure silver on a base of darkened, hardened steel. This piece is a dedicated study in intricate floral and geometric elegance, where the visual narrative is driven by symmetry and rhythmic patterns.
The ornamentation across the hilt and scabbard consists of dense silver floral vines and scrolling arabesques that shimmer with high contrast against the matte black surface. Utilizing the specialized "Teh-Tula" technique, Dr. Gahlot hammered fine silver wire into a cross-hatched steel surface, creating a permanent, seamless bond where the delicate, repeating blossoms appear to emerge directly from the body of the metal. The lower portion of the hilt features a distinct, striped geometric pattern, providing a structured foundation to the more organic, flowing floral designs above.
The dagger is set against a vibrant red background—a color traditionally chosen to symbolize the bravery and valor of the Rajput warrior class—and is framed with a gold fillet and a textured dark frame. By transforming a historic symbol of power into a sophisticated work of modern fine art, this piece celebrates the technical mastery and artistic flair of the Mewar region.
