About the Artwork +
This beautiful embroidery piece by Gudiya Devi, reflecting the folk tradition of the region, preserving this traditional craft. Here this particular craftwork depicts the village life in its simplest way.
Sujani embroidery is a prominent craft from the state of Bihar, derived from the words "sui" meaning needle, and "jani" meaning birth. Literally, it signifies an embroidery brought to life by the needle. Traditionally, women in Bihar created quilts and soft blankets for babies, utilising recycled old cotton saris and dhotis.
This textile piece beautifully captures the essence of village life in a surreal and simplistic manner. The minimalistic depiction features a small hut with a conical superstructure, complete with a door and two windows at either end. Next to it, a tree stands tall with branches adorned with leaves and fruits, symbolising life, growth and fertility. Birds flutter around the hut and tree, highlighting the peaceful ambience of the village.
A boy and girl can be seen joyfully flying a kite, with two balls nearby representing their playful spirit. The scene is set in the morning, adding to the freshness of the moment. In the foreground, a married woman is depicted holding a bucket of water by the well, with a cow tied nearby, ready to drink. The woman's married status is emphasised by her wearing a nath, a traditional symbol of married women in Bihar.
The background is intentionally plain, as the colourful threadwork, outlined in black, adds depth to the piece, while the frontal and minimalistic portrayal of the figures further enhances its charm.
