About the Artwork +
In this beautiful Gond painting, master artist Sukhiram Maravi honors Sahkaran, the legendary and loyal horse of King Hirakhan. The artwork tells the story of this noble steed, known for his bravery and unwavering loyalty, who participated in every war and battle alongside the king. The painting, a beautiful example of the Gond tribal art form from Madhya Pradesh, is characterized by its intricate patterns of dots and dashes, as well as its rich, earthy color palette. The composition features three horses, all representing the different facets of the powerful Sahkaran, standing gracefully under a canopy of stylized trees.
The painting features three horses: a large brown horse in front, a smaller horse in brown and orange, and another horse, only the face visible, in green and orange, all with their heads turned towards the center, creating an intimate and protective scene. The bodies of the horses are filled with a complex tapestry of patterns. The largest horse has intricate dot work on its main body and a lower half adorned with alternating diamond-shaped patterns in blue and orange. The other horses are similarly adorned with a mix of stripes, dots, and geometric shapes in various shades of blue, orange, red, and green.
All three have prominent blue heads with serene expressions, and their manes and tails are depicted in textured orange and brown, giving a sense of movement and volume. The horses stand together on grey rocks, surrounded by trees with patterned blue trunks and dense canopies of leaves in shades of green and blue, each filled with the characteristic Gond dot pattern.
This painting effortlessly showcases Sukhiram Maravi's distinct artistic style through his signature patterns: Datari and Torana. Datari features a continuous top line enclosing a series of small vertical strokes, all neatly finished with a row of dots along the bottom. The Torana pattern, reminiscent of traditional Indian garlands or hangings, forms graceful semi-circular bands of geometric designs, primarily composed of alternating triangles and, in some variations, interspersed dots effortlessly incorporated within the visage and body of the horses.
This piece is a perfect tribute to the enduring legacy of King Hirakhan and his loyal horse, Sahkaran. The three horses, representing the one and only Sahkaran, embody core virtues of loyalty, trust, and strength.
Drawing from nature and tribal narratives, the artist Sukhiram Maravi masterfully uses Gond art's unique patterns and rich colors to infuse this historical subject with a sense of wonder and intricate beauty. It is a powerful reminder of how historical and contemporary perspectives can be woven together to create a timeless work of art.
