About the Artwork +
This magnificent Tanjore painting by artist Sanjay Tandekar, a testament to the rich artistic heritage of South India, depicts Lord Balaji (Venkateswara) in the central panel, flanked by Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati. This iconic representation, characteristic of Tanjore art, is celebrated for its intricate gold leaf work, vibrant colors and embedded semi-precious stones, creating a deeply sacred and visually opulent experience.
At the heart of the composition is Lord Balaji, standing majestically within a grand, elaborately decorated shrine structure, called Prabhavali. His form is richly adorned with layers of traditional South Indian jewelry, necklaces, and garlands, all meticulously highlighted with shimmering gold leaf and vibrant colors like pink, green, white and blue, which create a striking contrast against his dark complexion. The intricate details of his tall crown and the architectural elements of the shrine itself are breathtaking, set with countless embedded stones that catch the light.
To the left of Lord Balaji, Goddess Lakshmi is seated gracefully on a lotus, her form rendered in radiant hues of red and gold, signifying prosperity and abundance. She holds lotus buds, and her hands are poised in gestures of protection (Abhaya mudra) and blessing (Varada mudra).
To the right, Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music, and art, is portrayed elegantly in shades of light blue and gold, seated with her celestial instrument, the veena, which she plays with serene focus. She also holds a book, symbolising knowledge.
This Tanjore painting presents a dazzling triptych: each deity is enshrined in a cusped-arched mandapam, intricately detailed with gold leaf and semi-precious stones against a deep indigo or black background, making the gold radiate. A vibrant orange-red base grounds each panel. The entire piece is framed by an ornate gold and red border with geometric and floral patterns, echoing ancient South Indian temple aesthetics. This meticulously embellished work offers a profound darshan of Lord Balaji with Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati, embodying blessings of wealth, wisdom, and cosmic order.
