About the Artwork +
"This is an exquisite Tanjore Painting by artist Sanjay Tandekar, depicting the Ram Darbar, featuring Lord Rama, his wife Sita, his brother Lakshman, and his devoted servant Hanuman, seated upon a throne.
Tanjore (Thanjavur) Painting is a classical South Indian art form known for its elaborate composition, vibrant colors, iconic relief work, and extensive use of gold leaf and semi-precious stones, primarily depicting Hindu deities.
At the center of the composition is the Ram Darbar, which symbolizes ideal governance (Rama Rajya), devotion, and familial love. Lord Rama, the central figure, is depicted with a dark blue complexion, seated on an opulent throne, surrounded by Sita and Lakshman. Rama and Lakshmana are both holding their bows and arrows, symbolizing their roles as protectors. Rama's hand is in Abhaya Mudra (the gesture of fearlessness and protection), while his other hand rests around Sita. Sita's hand is also in Abhaya Mudra, with her other hand gracefully resting on her lap. Hanuman, the epitome of devotion, is seated at Rama's feet, symbolizing service and loyalty. All figures are rendered in high relief, their forms and the central archway completely covered in gold leaf and studded with bright semi-precious stones (primarily red, green, and white), giving the artwork a spectacular, three-dimensional, and regal appearance. The throne features a lion motif, and a tray of offerings sits nearby.
The color palette is rich and dramatic, dominated by a deep black background which intensely contrasts with the vast amount of shimmering gold relief that defines the figures and the surrounding architectural elements. A striking vermilion red is used at the base, with vibrant pink and green used in the figures' garments and jewelry settings. The pattern is one of overwhelming symmetry and opulent detail, emphasizing the sacred geometry of the temple space and the divine majesty of the royal court.
This opulent, devotional artwork is a great addition to any collection, celebrating the divine family and the spectacular artistry of traditional Tanjore painting."
