About the Artwork +
This resplendent Tanjore painting by artist Sanjay Tandekar, a hallmark of the traditional South Indian art form, presents a divine composition featuring Lord Ganesha flanked by Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati. Rooted in the rich devotional heritage of Tamil Nadu, Tanjore paintings are renowned for their use of gold leaf, vibrant colors, and embedded gemstones, creating an almost three-dimensional effect that radiates sanctity and prosperity.
In the central panel, Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, is depicted seated in profound grace, his form rendered in luminous complexion, adorned with exquisite golden jewelry and a magnificent crown. He holds his traditional attributes, including his elephant head, trunk, pot belly, a modak an,d his broken tusk, symbolizing wisdom and sacrifice. His vahana, the mouse-mushaka, rests humbly at his feet.
To Ganesha's left, Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity, is seated on a lavish throne, her form radiant in hues of red and gold. She holds two blooming lotus buds, symbolizing purity and growth, and her hands are positioned in gestures of protection (Abhaya mudra) and blessing (Varada mudra).
To Ganesha's right, Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music, and art, is portrayed elegantly in shades of light blue and gold, seated with her celestial instrument, the veena, which she plays with serene focus. She also holds a book, symbolising knowledge.
Each deity is enthroned within an arched, ornate mandapam, meticulously crafted with intricate gold leaf work and studded with vibrant semi-precious stones, set against a deep indigo or black background, making the gold shimmer even more intensely.
The entire piece is framed by a border rich with repeating patterns in gold and red, enhancing its ceremonial grandeur and echoing the architectural details found in South Indian temples. This painting, with its dazzling use of gold and intricate detailing, offers a profound darshan of these revered deities, embodying blessings of wisdom, prosperity, and knowledge, all meticulously brought to life through the distinctive Tanjore technique.
