Originating near the Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, this art style has historically been celebrated for its ability to capture social trends, satire and changing domestic partnerships with absolute economy of line. This artwork captures a couple sharing a relaxed, conversational evening.
At the heart of the composition sits the affectionate couple, closely intertwined as they rest together upon a crimson upholstered daybed. The woman (Bibi), positioned on the left, sits cross-legged on the platform, her body turned gracefully toward her partner. She is beautifully attired in a red sari with a dark border, her arms ornamented with traditional white bangles and necklaces. With a subtle, content expression, she raises a circular palm-leaf fan, using it to disperse the lingering hookah smoke, showcasing a tender act of domestic care.
The man (Babu) sits on the right, reclining comfortably against a large bolster pillow. He is dressed in a black kurta decorated with a dense pattern of white polka dots and trimmed with a vibrant green panel at the shoulder. Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
