This inventive Kalighat painting by Uttam Chitrakar renders a woman as though she exists entirely inside a smartphone screen. Her figure framed by the device's rounded edges while a scatter of social media icons, a heart-shaped "like" notification, a play button, and platform logos, hover around her like a digital halo, a sly visualisation of a life lived through, and validated by, the feed.
Kalighat painting is a folk art tradition that originated in 19th-century Kolkata near the Kalighat Kali Temple, first produced by patua (scroll-painter) families for pilgrims and temple visitors. Its bold, calligraphic brushwork, flat unmodulated colour washes, and emphatic black contouring carried it from devotional imagery into one of India's most recognisable folk idioms.
The woman stands frontally within the phone's frame, dressed in a pink garment and layered pearl necklaces, holding a smaller phone of her own cradled against her chest, a screen within a screen. Her heavy-lidded gaze and composed expression carry the same impassivity found throughout Kalighat's traditional figures, even as the visual context around her is thoroughly contemporary.
Decorative leaves, rendered with the same bead-like white detailing as jewelry elsewhere in the series, flank the phone on either side, echoing traditional foliate framing devices while gesturing toward the way digital life has become as ever-present and enveloping as nature itself.

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
