This Tanjore painting by Sanjay Tandekar depicts the divine couple Shiva and Parvati in a state of serene benevolence, known as Sadaiva Shiva-Parvati. They are shown seated together with their hands raised in the Abhaya Mudra (the gesture of fearlessness), while a sacred Shiva Lingam is positioned prominently in the foreground. Shiva is identified by his blue complexion, the crescent moon in his matted hair, and his trishula (trident), while Parvati is adorned in a vibrant red saree and ornate jewelry.
The artwork is a classic example of the Thanjavur school's opulence, featuring extensive gold foil work and high-relief gesso. Sanjay Tandekar has applied a thick layer of limestone paste to create the raised textures of the divine crowns, jewelry, and the monumental pillars of the temple arch. These sections are covered in 22-karat gold foil, creating a luminous glow against the deep, midnight-blue background. The composition is finished with a decorative border studded with red and green stones, encasing the celestial scene in a jewel-like frame.
