This masterful Mata ni Pachedi textile by Vasant Manubhai Chittara serves as a sacred "nomadic shrine," traditionally unfurled by the Vaghari community, who were barred from worshipping their divine Mother Goddesses (local goddesses) in the mainstream Hindu temples. Utilizing the ancient kalam (bamboo pen) technique and natural dyes, the composition is organized into a detailed narrative that honors the various manifestations of the Goddess, each defined by her unique vahana and protective attributes.
The artwork is anchored by three prominent architectural sanctums, each housing a specific deity. At the heart of the textile stands Meldi Mata, the powerful goddess of protection and justice, seated upon her goat. She is portrayed in a four-armed form, holding ritual weapons and attributes that signify her role as a fierce guardian against negative energies. To her right, within a secondary shrine, is Bahuchar Mata, the goddess of fertility and the patron of the Hijra community, gracefully positioned atop her rooster. On the left, the third sanctum features Momai Mata, a revered folk goddess associated with the desert regions, seated upon her camel.
The entire canvas is a rhythmic composition of secondary figures and symbolic fillers that reflect the vibrant life of Gujarat’s rural traditions. Surrounding the goddesses is an assembly of musicians, devotees bearing offerings, and celestial beings descending from a sky filled with floral vines. Each figure is rendered with characteristic fine linework and microscopic patterns. The palette is strictly traditional, utilizing madder red, indigo blue, and black to create a stark, devotional contrast against the natural cream cotton background.
A broad, intricate border of repeating geometric triangles and floral scrolls frames the cosmic scene, serving as a spiritual boundary between the sacred and the profane. Through this work, Vasant Manubhai Chittara captures the essence of a "living shrine," where every animal vehicle and every meticulously drawn line bridges the gap between ancient mythology and the contemporary devotional practices of his community.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.

Returns and Replacements
We offer replacements or repairs if your artwork arrives damaged or has a quality issue. As each artwork is handcrafted, we do not accept returns or refunds for orders received in the expected condition.
Delivery Timeline
Ready To Ship/In Stock artworks are shipped in 3-4 days. We only accept return requests for Ready to Ship/In stock artworks placed within a week from date of delivery. However, no returns can be accepted for international deliveries.

Mata ni Pachedi is a traditional folk art form from Gujarat, India, created by the nomadic Vaghari community, known for its vibrant depictions of Hindu goddesses, particularly the mother goddess, Mata. Literally translating to "behind the goddess," these artworks were traditionally used as backdrops in shrines, evolving from portable shrines created by the marginalized Vaghari community who were denied temple entry. It is traditionally created on cotton cloth using natural dyes, with outlines drawn using a bamboo stick dipped in black dye made from jaggery and iron, and colors filled in from natural sources like turmeric and indigo.
