This vibrant Pithora painting by Kamta Tahed delineates the vibrant and meticulous depiction of a pair of peacocks in a stylised manner. It showcases the true essence of folk art in the contemporary period. The way the peacocks are represented, with their tails blooming like flowers, intertwines nature and art beautifully.
Pithora art is popular among the Rathwa communities of Gujarat and has extended to the Madhya Pradesh region. This folk art tradition is also recognised by the Bhil and Bhilwala communities. The major significance of this art lies in its connection to nature, as it often depicts animals, trees and daily life scenes that reflect the social and cultural milieu. Originally, these paintings were created on walls in honour of Baba Pithora, also popularly known as ritualistic paintings.
In this artwork, a pair of peacocks occupy the center, showcasing a vibrant colour palette with shades of purple, yellow, white and pink arranged in linear dots against a blue background. From their bodies emerge roots and branches, which bloom into countless flowers and green leaves. The flowers are yellow with brown buds at their centres, pleasing the viewer's eye, all depicted in a stylised manner. The flowers create a cheerful backdrop for the artwork, symbolising positivity, fertility, love and unity through the presence of the peacock pair and the flowers.
The painting is framed by a border of inverted triangles drawn adjacent to one another, a typical feature in Pithora artworks, with distinct coloured dots against the blue background. These dots are rendered in various colours such as white, yellow and black and are set in a vertical position. The composition highlights the interconnectedness of nature with animals, reinforcing the worldview of the harmony amogst various aspects of nature.

Pithora painting is a vibrant and ritualistic art form practiced by the Rathwa, Bhilala, and Bhil tribes in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Unlike decorative art, Pithora art holds deep spiritual significance, serving as sacred offerings to deities and reflecting the interconnectedness of life, nature, and the divine through tribal symbolism, folk stories, and natural elements. Its history dates back centuries, tied to oral traditions and religious practices, primarily honoring Pithora Baba, a protective deity. The paintings are typically created on mud-lime plastered inner walls of the Pithora Ghar, using natural dyes like turmeric, vermilion, rice flour, and indigo, with contemporary artists also using synthetic pigments. The process is guided by a tribal priest (Badwa) and executed by an artist (Lakhara), often to fulfill vows or invite prosperity. Pithora art is characterized by bold outlines, vibrant colors, stylized figures, and a narrative flow without sketching, commonly depicting horses (symbolizing deities), village scenes, nature, and cosmic elements across three cosmic zones. While now finding space in galleries and urban decor, the core tradition remains rooted in community storytelling.
