This striking Madhubani painting by Pratima Bharti presents a stylized depiction of the Buddha, blending traditional Mithila artistry with Buddhist iconography. Madhubani art is a vibrant folk painting tradition from the Mithila region of India, renowned for its intricate geometric patterns, bold colors and symbolic depictions of mythology and nature.
At the center of the composition is Buddha, shown with characteristic large, expressive eyes and curly hair rendered in spiraling black ink. His curly hair and long earlobes symbolize spiritual awakening, detachment and compassion. The curly hair represents the remnants of his royal topknot after renunciation, while elongated earlobes symbolize his former life as a prince who wore heavy, expensive jewelry, showing his renunciation of material wealth for enlightenment. The urna, a spiral, circular is located between the eyebrows of Buddha, symbolizing divine vision, enlightenment and wisdom. As one of the 32 physical marks of a Great Man (mahapurusha), it represents the third eye and signifies spiritual insight.
Buddha is seated in a meditative pose, with his right hand raised in the vitarka mudra, representing the transmission of knowledge and discussion. His robes are filled with diagonal orange and grey stripes, showcasing the Kachni (hatching) technique to create texture and depth, a stark contrast against the solid Bharni color-filling in the background.
A vibrant yellow circle immediately surrounds his head, which is further encased by a large, red radiating halo composed of petal-like strokes. He sits upon a matching red lotus base that rests over a colorful geometric semicircular platform. In Indian art, the lotus flower is a symbol of auspiciousness, purity and prosperity.
The composition is divided into distinct environmental zones. The lower section features blue, wavy linework representing water, while the upper corners are occupied by stylized yellow and green trees with detailed leaf patterns.
The scene is contained within a multi-layered frame. The primary inner border consists of a repeating orange heart-leaf motif, while the middle layer features smaller geometric bands in red, blue and green. The triangles are used to depict water chestnuts, found abundantly in the region. The outer-most solid black border provides a structured finish to the vibrant interior.
