Hands-On Workshop with Ashutosh Verma
Join us for an immersive Sanjhi workshop with Ashutosh Verma a sixth-generation Sanjhi artist from Mathura’s Verma community. His family has practiced Sanjhi for nearly three centuries, with the tradition being carried forward from his great-grandfather, Shri Chain Shuk Das Verma.
Having begun his artistic journey at the age of five, Ashutosh has spent over 15 years learning and practicing Sanjhi. His family has received both State and National recognition for their contribution to the art form. At just 20 years old, Ashutosh continues to work alongside his father, exploring ways to preserve this traditional craft while bringing his own perspective to the practice.
About the Artform
Sanjhi is a delicate paper-cutting and stencil art tradition from Mathura and Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, deeply rooted in Krishna Bhakti. Traditionally used to adorn temple spaces and altars, Sanjhi features intricate, symmetrical designs inspired by Lord Krishna’s stories, floral motifs, and devotional imagery.
In this hands-on workshop, Ashutosh will introduce you to the history, techniques, and craftsmanship behind Sanjhi. You will learn how to create a few traditional Sanjhi designs, understanding the precision and patience required to carefully cut and compose these intricate patterns.
