This detailed Pichwai painting by Naveen Soni represents a fascinating stylistic convergence. While employing the meticulous techniques, rich pigments and lush aesthetics of traditional Nathdwara Pichwai painting, the subject matter is a classic Jain Tirthapatta (a sacred pilgrimage map).
Pichwai is a traditional cloth-based scroll painting from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, primarily created to adorn the sanctuary of Shrinathji (a seven-year-old child manifestation of Krishna) and is known for its intricate detailing and rich, vivid colors. This painting functions as an elaborate visual map of Mount Shatrunjaya located near Palitana, Gujarat. This site is the most sacred hill pilgrimage for the Shvetambara sect of Jainism.
The core of the painting is set against a vibrant, solid emerald-green background, depicting the bustling, sacred mountainous landscape of Mount Shatrunjaya. The absolute center is anchored by a grand, multi-tiered golden temple. It features a prominent ribbed central dome (shikhara) flanked by smaller pavilions. Inside the main sanctum sits a golden Tirthankara in the meditative lotus posture (padmasana).
Directly below the main temple, a group of male devotees, dressed in yellow lower garments, are depicted carrying a sacred platform, their hands raised in reverence. Other similar figures are scattered throughout the landscape, standing in prayer (anjali mudra) or offering water from small pots.
At the bottom center of the green field, a stylized, rocky mountain peak is rendered in textured grey and white. At its heart lies a small cave-like shrine housing another seated golden Tirthankara, symbolizing the ascetic origins and high-altitude locations of many Jain holy sites.
The green expanse surrounding the central temple teems with intricately rendered details that breathe life into the sacred geography. The landscape is dotted with beautifully stylized animals representing peace and divine harmony. This includes wandering elephants, deer, peacocks, flying birds and even tigers sitting calmly. This highlights the Jain principle of ahimsa (non-violence), which promotes peaceful co-existence.
A distinct, cross-shaped stepped water tank (kund) is positioned just above the procession of devotees, a common feature in temple architecture for ritual purification. At the very top center of the green field, a golden, radiating sun looks down upon the sacred landscape, blessing the pilgrimage site.
Framing the central green landscape on all four sides is a meticulously structured, grid-like border containing dozens of miniature shrines. Each small rectangular panel features a deep crimson background and a golden archway. Inside every arch sits an identical golden Tirthankara in deep meditation, complete with a halo. This repetitive grid represents the 24 Tirthankaras, multiplying the spiritual gravity of the piece.
The four extreme corners of this inner grid feature slightly larger square panels. These highlight prominent Jinas with more elaborate architectural framing and attendant figures, anchoring the borders with heightened visual importance.
Enclosing this immense and complex spiritual diagram is a continuous, traditional outer border in classic Pichwai style. Painted on a dark green base, the border features a rhythmic, repeating pattern of intricate golden floral blossoms and winding, leafy vines. This pristine, highly structured perimeter elegantly contains the sprawling cosmological map, grounding the rich gold and crimson details of the interior with a refined, traditional finish.

Returns and Replacements
We offer replacements or repairs if your artwork arrives damaged or has a quality issue. As each artwork is handcrafted, we do not accept returns or refunds for orders received in the expected condition.
Delivery Timeline
Ready To Ship/In Stock artworks are shipped in 3-4 days. We only accept return requests for Ready to Ship/In stock artworks placed within a week from date of delivery. However, no returns can be accepted for international deliveries.
Once your order is placed, our team stays in constant communication with the artist to track the progress and ensure the quality of your order. You will receive regular updates from us throughout this process.
