Govardhan Leela - the act of lifting Mount Govardhan is a central theme in Pichwai and is symbolically depicted by a raised left hand over Shrinathji’s head. The painting presents a mesmerizing and dynamic portrayal of the iconic event. The composition is a rich tableau of divine drama, capturing the grandeur and intensity of the scene.
The painting features a vast and dramatic landscape dominated by a huge mountain, which serve as a backdrop to the central event. Dark, tumultuous clouds swirl overhead, thunderbolts crack through the sky, and rain pours down in heavy sheets, creating a sense of impending storm and chaos. A swirling grey river cuts across the scene, enhancing the tumultuous atmosphere and adding a dramatic division between the mountainous and plain areas of the composition. At the top right corner is Lord Indra, riding his mount Airavata, responsible for the torrential rain.
