About the Artwork +
This Madhubani painting by artist Pratima Bharti depicts the powerful scene of Mahishasuramardini, the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon, Mahishasura. Madhubani art is a vibrant folk painting tradition from the Mithila region of India, renowned for its intricate geometric patterns, bold colors and symbolic depictions of mythology and nature.
The heart of the piece is the multi-armed Goddess Durga, depicted with the signature large, almond-shaped eyes of the Madhubani style, with a third eye in between her eyebrows. Her ten arms fan out in a semi-circular array, each hand wielding a divine weapon which include bow and arrow (dhanushya-baan), discus (chakra), noose and goad (pasha and ankusha), conch shell (shanka), mace (gadha) and snake (symbolising the ascent toward spiritual awakening). The central weapon is the trident (trishul) which the Goddess uses to vanquish Mahishasura. These icons represent her role as the ultimate source of cosmic energy (Shakti).
She is adorned in an elaborate green and orange ghagra-choli, featuring intricate patterns that mimic the texture of fine embroidery. Below her, the vanquished Mahishasura is depicted in his buffalo form, his head severed by the Goddess’s trishul, symbolizing the triumph of dharma (righteousness) over ego and ignorance.
The halo, radiating divine energy from the Goddess, is constructed using a series of concentric semi-circles that expand outward, creating a sense of rhythmic vibration. Immediately behind her head in “Bharni” is a solid, vibrant yellow disc, representing the pure light of consciousness. Moving outward, the halo transitions into multiple bands of dense "Kachni" (fine line-filling). These bands alternate between colors like teal, orange and red. The outermost layer of the halo is finished with a delicate row of yellow, petal-like scallops, making the halo appear like a blooming lotus.
The scene is anchored by a sophisticated, multi-layered border. A wide band featuring repeating floral and petal motifs in alternating shades of pink and orange forms the main decorative border. A sharp row of multicolored triangles provides a rhythmic transition from the central action. The triangles are used to depict water chestnuts, found abundantly in the region. A solid black outer edge that provides a crisp, formal conclusion to the energetic and colorful interior.
