About the Artwork +

This Assamese manuscript beautifully depicts the story of Vishnu when he came down to save his devout worshipper Gajendra, the elephant. The tale tells us how Gajendra consistently worshipped and chanted the name of Vishnu when he was stuck in the clutches of a crocodile.
The painting depicts the water body in the form of a rectangular body, with Gajendra and the crocodile in it. The four handed Vishnu holds a lotus, shankh, Sudarshan chakra and a mace. He rides the Garuda, who is depicted in its anthropomorphic form.
The painting is made in typical Apabhramsa style with red background.

The assamese manuscript paintings have been a vibrant form of painting and were given a definite shape during the bhakti movement by saint sankaradeva in the 15th century.
Over 150 illustrated manuscripts have been discovered in Assam till date. The manuscript paintings that we see today have a stylistic amalgamation of the rajasthani and mughal miniature art. The different styles of Assamese Manuscript Painting Tradition are Sattriya, Gadgayan, Darrangi and the Tai style. The manuscript paintings consist of religious illustrations from the hindu mythology. However, there are secular manuscripts as well, such as the buranjis, or the manuscripts on chronicles of kings. The natural colours red, yellow, blue, white and black are used in the paintings. Traditionally these were drawn on the bark of agar (sanchipat), hand made paper pulp (tulapat), wooden plate and on muga clothes.

Our Assamese Manuscript painting artist Mridu Moucham Bora has been associated with the different art and cultural traditions of Assam, such as manuscript painting, mask making, wood carving, terracotta, etc. He has written extensively on manuscript conservation as well. He is one of the only living artists to have illustrated five manuscripts in sankari painting tradition. He uses the traditional and folk elements in his paintings, bringing them back from the verge of extinction.

Art Form


The Manuscript Paintings of Assam have a long history, dating back to the 16th century. These Manuscripts are polychrome paintings done on materials such as 'Sanchipat,' which is the bark of the Agar Tree, or a wooden plate made of handmade paper pulp. Along with the paintings, the manuscripts include written descriptions of various narratives. The paintings depicted illustrations from various religious sources such as the Bhagvata, Puranas, Ramayana, and Mahabharata. A lot of these manuscripts have their own unique characteristics, and aside from depicting religious scriptures, they have also become the home of many narratives about various kingdoms and their activities- kings, queens, soldiers on battlefields, and people from everyday life- thus becoming a reliable source of information.
