This is a divine piece in Madhubani by Avinash Karn, rendering the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva, where he strikes the pose of Lord Nataraja, literally meaning King of Dance.
Madhubani (or Mithila) painting is a traditional Indian folk art originating from the Mithila region of Bihar and Nepal. Characterized by vibrant, natural colors, intricate geometric patterns, and bold outlines, it traditionally depicts Hindu deities, nature, and ceremonial scenes. Historically practiced by women on mud walls, it is now widely created on handmade paper and canvas.
The abstracted Nataraj motif in this render symbolises the eternal cosmic cycle of creation, destruction, and preservation. In this render, Nataraja is depicted in a chaturbhuj (four-armed) version, where one hand carries the Damaru, symbolising the continuous passage of time and cosmic rhythm. The other hand has Flames or Agni, symbolising the force that dissolves the old physical world to pave the way for renewal, while spiritually burning away a devotee's illusions. A raised hand in Abhaya Mudra symbolises solace, blessing the viewer with safety, fearlessness, and protection from evil and spiritual ignorance, while the lower hand below it in Gajahasta Mudra, which points diagonally across the chest toward the raised left foot, symbolises liberation and refuge, escaping worldly bondage and finding spiritual freedom. Shiva's third eye, the crescent moon and his jata (matted hair), a part of his classical iconography can be seen here.
The dwarf beneath the Lord’s feet is the Apasmara Purusha or Muyalaka, who personifies spiritual ignorance (avidya), arrogance, and the human ego. It is believed that he cannot be killed and is hence found below the feet of Nataraja as the latter restrains and subdues the former.
The artist here has employed an analogous colour palette along with monochrome line patterns traditional to Madhubani art to enhance the essence and vision of the composition. The red colour signifies energy while the yellow colour signifies positivity.
