This lush, densely worked Warli artwork by Krushna Sadashiv Bhusare presents an unbroken panorama of the natural world, filling the entire canvas with crops, birds and flowering growth in a composition that leaves the tradition's usual human figures almost entirely behind.
Warli painting is a traditional tribal art form from Maharashtra, India, practised by the Warli people of the state's Sahyadri hill region using a simple geometric vocabulary of circles, triangles and squares to show daily life and nature. Traditionally rendered in a white rice-paste mixture applied by bamboo stick onto walls prepared with red-brown mud and cow dung, the tradition's themes range across gods and goddesses, the harvest season, fauna and the community's rituals, all united by a deep and abiding reverence for the natural world. Krushna Sadashiv Bhusare continues this practice, here devoting an entire composition to nature in its own right, rather than as a setting for human or ritual activity.
The canvas is filled, almost without gap, by dense rows of tall standing crops and slender flowering stalks rendered in fine white linework against a warm rust-brown ground, giving the entire field a rippling, textured density like a wind moving through tall grass. At the composition's centre, two peacocks face one another, their fanned tails meeting to form a great arching shape at the heart of the painting, while a winding river or path traces its way through the surrounding vegetation and a radiant, sunburst-like form glows at the lower centre of the canvas. A row of birds flies along the very top edge of the composition, the only other living presence beyond the peacocks in an image otherwise devoted entirely to plant life.
Nature occupies a place of central, active reverence in Warli belief, understood not as a passive backdrop to human life but as itself alive with spirit, a conviction that runs through the tribe's worship of trees, rivers, mountains and animals alike. By omitting the huts, dancers and daily activities that populate so much of the tradition's other work, and instead allowing crops, birds and peacocks to fill the entire composition uninterrupted, this artwork gives nature itself the undivided centrality more often granted to a deity or a ritual chauk.
In its density and its deliberate absence of human incident, this artwork stands as one of the more contemplative expressions of the Warli worldview, a reminder that, for the community, nature was never simply scenery. Krushna Sadashiv Bhusare's Nature allows the land itself, in full and abundant growth, to take centre stage.
