About the Artwork +
This Kalighat painting by Uttam Chitrakar is an episodic visual narrative that brings together key chronological events from the Aranya Kanda (Forest Book) of the epic Ramayana. Characterized by bold contours, fluid linework and voluminous forms, this masterpiece honors the 19th-century Bengali folk art tradition while acting as a storytelling scroll condensed into a single canvas. The painting seamlessly charts a sequential story across three distinct zones, moving from the stable center to the tragic events on the left and right.
At the center of the canvas, is a scene akin to the Ram Darbar, during their fourteen-year forest exile (Vanavas). Seated close together on a mound are Lord Ram and Sita. Ram is painted in his traditional green complexion (marakata hue). He wears a vibrant yellow dhoti and a quiver of arrows strapped across his back. Sita leans tenderly toward him, radiating grace in a brilliant red sari decorated with fine white patterns. Her head is adorned with a grand golden crown. Both of them are backed by a large, pink oval halo.
Standing to the right is Ram's devoted brother, Lakshman. He is depicted with a warm golden-yellow complexion, dressed in a cerulean blue dhoti. With his left arm extended toward his brother, he stands alert as the family's guardian. Just below this scene are two vanara (monkey) devotees on either side, with their hands joined together in a gesture of pranam.
To the left, Ram and Sita are shown nestled securely inside a small forest hut adorned with fine white cross-hatched lines. Just outside the cottage door, the demon Maricha, transformed into a magical golden deer, prances playfully. The deer is painted in a bright ochre-orange hue. Sita looks out, completely enchanted by its beauty, and asks her husband to capture it for her, setting Ravan's plot into motion.
The right side of the painting erupts into intense dramatic action, depicting the climax of the forest episode. The demon king, Ravan, is seen fleeing back to Lanka after abducting Sita. He is depicted with a deep blue complexion and a mustache, riding a small brown horse-drawn chariot (ratha) indicated by a large spoked wheel at the bottom edge. Sitting directly behind Ravan inside the chariot is a distressed Sita, raising her arm in a gesture of despair as she is carried away.
Soaring directly above the chariot is the noble vulture king, Jatayu. He is rendered as a colossal, cosmic bird enveloped in a magnificent, sunburst-like circular halo of bright yellow and red feathers. Jatayu fiercely attacks Ravan from mid-air, opening his beak and striking downward in a desperate attempt to rescue the princess.
The background is an immersive, densely layered forest landscape (Panchavati) that beautifully anchors the narrative. The entire upper half of the canvas is dominated by a deep indigo sky covered by a heavy canopy of winding forest trees. The branches are covered in stylized, rounded green leaves interspersed with glowing white circular blossoms. Perched high on a branch to the left is a colorful peacock looking downward. On the grassy forest floor below the central trio, two spotted deer lie peacefully on the grass.
The artist displays excellent control over the Kalighat style's signature economy of line. Broad, sweeping black outlines define the muscular volume of the human figures, while fine white line-work details the jewelry, garments and the intricate texturing of the chariot horses. The palette relies heavily on the vibrant contrast of primary red, yellow and blue hues against the deep greens and indigos of the natural world, transforming a complex literary epic into a stunningly readable, expressive visual tribute.
