About the Artwork +
This beautiful Kalamkari painting by Siva Reddy showcases a beautifully structured "Tree of Life" composition.
Kalamkari, literally translating to pen-art, is an ancient textile tradition from Andhra Pradesh. It involves a meticulous process of sketching with a bamboo pen (kalam). The roots of Kalamkari can be traced to ancient temple traditions, where artisans were commissioned to paint large narrative cloths that adorned temple interiors. These paintings served as visual scriptures, narrating stories from Hindu epics like the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata Purana.
The base of the composition is anchored by a semi-circular mound assembly, sprouting from which is a thick, winding red trunk that curves dramatically up and to the right before twisting back to form a dense canopy. The branches are densely laden with an assortment of stylized flora interspersed with multi-shaded green leaves.
The celestial tree serves as a sanctuary for sacred avian life. Standing at the base of the trunk, atop the earth mounds, is a magnificent peacock captured in a frontal posture. Its indigo-blue body, golden neck and detailed wings are framed by a massive, perfectly circular fan of tail feathers. High above in the upper left canopy, a peahen is perched elegantly on a curving branch. Depicted in profile facing right, she features a patterned golden body, a small crest and long, striped tail feathers that trail behind her as she looks down over the blossoming tree.
The composition is enclosed within a multi-layered geometric border that cleanly structures the textile panel. The primary border is a wide, striking frame filled with a continuous sequence of repeating, heart-shaped patterns rendered in alternating blocks of deep red, indigo blue and mustard yellow. A final, solid band of warm yellow finishes the absolute edge of the canvas, tying the rich, earth-toned interior elements together into a cohesive manner.
