About the Artwork +

This exquisite Kantha embroidery by Mahamaya Sikdar is a breathtaking representation of the Tree of Life, a sacred and timeless symbol in Indian philosophy and spirituality. The intricate hand-stitched motifs, set against a natural fabric, reflect the profound cosmic order, echoing the Ashvattha tree from the Vedas. The tree’s branches extend symmetrically, adorned with delicate floral patterns, vibrant leaves, and an array of animals and celestial beings, illustrating the interconnectedness of all life forms. In Vedic traditions, the Ashvattha, often depicted with its roots growing upwards towards the heavens and branches reaching downward, signifies the divine link between the spiritual and earthly realms. This Kantha masterpiece embodies this symbolism, where the deep roots stand for eternal truth and the flourishing branches represent the transient material world. The embroidery, with its detailed paisley designs, birds, fish, and mythological elements, urges the observer to look beyond Maya (illusion) and seek Brahman (higher knowledge). The border, meticulously stitched with repeating leaf motifs, frames the central imagery, reinforcing the cycle of creation, sustenance, and dissolution. The harmonious use of earthy tones—muted greens, blues, and reds—adds to the organic and ethereal quality of this textile art, while the inclusion of folk motifs bridges the narrative of ancient wisdom with everyday life. Mahamaya Sikdar’s craftsmanship not only preserves the rich tradition of Bengal’s Kantha embroidery but also transforms it into a spiritual tapestry that invites contemplation and reverence.

Mahamaya Sikdar

Mahamaya Sikdar
Mahamaya Sikdar, an Indian artist and a distinguished recipient of both the President’s Award and a National Award, embodies a deep commitment to textiles and heritage, a passion cultivated from a young age. She masterfully practices and teaches the exquisite art of Kantha, a traditional quilting technique inherited from her maternal lineage, to a collective of approximately 300 women. Through her daily guidance, Mahamaya Ji not only provides these artisans with a valuable source of income but also inspires younger generations to embrace quilting, ensuring the preservation of this rich tradition. Her leadership fosters a collaborative environment where intricate Kantha creations, some taking up to a year, and simpler quilts, completed in months, are brought to life.

Kantha Embroidery

Kantha embroidery is an indigenous household craft originating from rural Bengal and Orissa, where women layer soft, worn-out clothes using a simple running stitch with colorful threads. Each unique piece, often having a slightly wrinkled appearance and identical designs on both sides, reflects the craftsman's individual choice in color, composition, and technique. Historically, Kantha, possibly named after the Sanskrit word 'kontha' for rags, served as a means of recycling old garments into beautiful quilts, evolving into a cherished tradition passed down through generations. Its cultural significance is highlighted by a legend of Prince Siddharta wearing a 'chhinna Kantha' and its mention by Rabindranath Tagore. The art form is identified by its distinctive hand-executed "Kantha stitch," used to create intricate patterns from floral to geometric designs on various products like sarees, dupattas, quilts, and wall hangings, with regional variations influencing motifs and color palettes.
