Seated on a large, vibrant lotus, and holding a pot overflowing with glistening coins, flanked by two moon-white elephants, the elegantly adorned Goddess of Wealth and Fortune is a vision of prosperity and grace. Just as Vishnu is known for his unique avatars, so is the Goddess with her distinctive forms. As a consort of Lord Rama, she is Sita, and as the most beloved wife of Krishna, she is Rukmini. As per Harivamsa, Lakshmi is the mother of Kama, the God of Love, drawing an interesting parallel to the Greek Goddess Aphrodite whose son is Eros, the god of Love and Desire. Lakshmi is an embodiment of timeless beauty. She is the bringer of fortune and is the ultimate guardian of rightful wealth. For these primary reasons, Lakshmi continues to be immensely popular among Indian householders.
It is worth noting that, apart from her prominent avatars, Lakshmi manifests in various forms, each representing a different aspect of prosperity. Worshipped as Ashta Lakshmi, she is Adi Lakshmi, Dhana Lakshmi, Dhanhya Lakshmi, Gaja Lakshmi, Santana Lakshmi, Veera Lakshmi, Vidya Lakshmi, and Vijaya Lakshmi.
