About the Artwork +
This striking manuscript painting by Sujit Das vividly illustrates the miraculous escape of the infant Lord Krishna from the Mathura jail, a central and foundational moment in his birth narrative. The elongated composition uses bold color fields and strong black outlines to narrate the sequence of events.
On the far right, Devaki, identified by her pink attire, is shown within the stylized prison hut, representing the mother immediately after the divine birth. The focus then shifts to the center, where Vasudeva carries the blue-skinned baby Krishna through the blue and white patterned water of the Yamuna River, which miraculously parted for their passage. Protecting them from the storm above is the immense white serpent Adishesha (Shesha Naag), whose hood forms an arch of divine protection over Vasudeva.
The miraculous nature of the event is confirmed by two key details: a blue-skinned figure lies unconscious on the ground in the lower-center, representing the guard whose supernatural slumber (yoga-nidra) permitted the escape. Simultaneously, three musicians and attendants celebrate the divine Lila (play) with music and dance in the upper register, confirming the cosmic significance of Krishna's successful journey to Gokul.
This beautiful rendition by Das serves as a perfect ode to the divine, showcasing the eternal victory of good over evil and the true power of positive dharma. It profoundly encapsulates the struggles and subsequent emergence of the Great God, who, through his human avatar, reminds us of the value and potential of the human experience. The painting thus offers a powerful visual summary of Lord Krishna's divine leelas, encouraging all viewers to take the path of righteousness and abide by the essential lessons of life.
