About the Artwork +

This vibrant Madhubani painting by master artist Avinash Karn is a contemporary take on a traditional art form. It's a bustling tapestry of activity that captures the energy of Kolkata through the transformative journey of its central character, Moumita Ghosh.

The painting tells the story of Moumita, who feels a deep unease with her life and the city she lives in. After a frightening walk home one night, she expresses a desire to move. Her husband responds that running away is cowardly and that citizens have a duty to improve society. His words inspire her to wander the city with a new purpose: to simply observe life, not to find fault.

The canvas becomes a visual map of her transformation, depicting moments of simple humanity, from a woman offering a religious blessing to a laborer near the Writers' Building, to Moumita praying for guidance at a Durga Puja pandal.

As her perspective shifts, she sees the women of Sonagachi weaving jute bags and observes the renovation of the historic Roxy Cinema. The artwork captures her powerful encounter with the transgender community and her spontaneous decision to dance on stage at a street play titled "Reclaim the Night."

The painting's backdrop is alive with the unique energy of Kolkata, featuring vendors, a tram with the message "Love Tram, Save Kolkata," and the city's familiar hustle. Through these experiences, Moumita's perception of the city's flaws transforms, leading her to become a social activist and embrace the city she once wanted to leave.

Ultimately, this meaningful painting is a powerful blend of Madhubani's beautiful aesthetics and a profound social narrative. It perfectly explores the historic backdrop of Kolkata, sending a clear message about a citizen's moral and social responsibility to improve their surroundings rather than just criticize. This beautiful rendition serves as an ode to the enduring power of Madhubani art, showcasing how a contemporary folk art piece can become a powerful tool to shape thinking, inspire change, and leave a lasting message through visual storytelling.

Avinash Karn

Avinash Karn
Avinash Karn is a distinguished Madhubani artist from Ranti, Madhubani, Bihar, who began learning the traditional craft from his family at a young age, inspired by renowned artist Ganga Devi. As a third-generation Madhubani artist, he also holds a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts with a focus on sculpture from Banaras Hindu University. Karn has gained significant international recognition, including an invitation to the Fumetto Comic Festival in Switzerland, where his work was displayed at the Lucerne airport, and he conducted workshops and speaking engagements. He has also exhibited at prestigious venues like the Lalit Kala Academy and the Birla Academy, and received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, which facilitated various workshops. Notably, he contributed to a massive collaborative mural at Azeem Premji University in Bangalore. While maintaining traditional Madhubani styles, Karn explores contemporary subjects like cinema series and cityscapes, investing heavily in research to bring a fresh perspective and avoid common repetitions. Despite early financial struggles as a freelance artist, he leveraged social media to build his network. His ambition extends to preserving and promoting lesser-known Madhubani art forms such as Godna tattoos, Godna paintings, and low-relief paintings, with a goal to research and document their heritage through books.

Madhubani

Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance. Traditionally created by women on walls and floors during auspicious occasions, these paintings depict Hindu mythology, nature, folklore, and daily life, often incorporating Hindu deities, scenes from epics, and natural motifs like flowers and animals. Legend suggests its origins trace back to King Janak's commission for Sita's wedding. Artists traditionally use natural pigments from plants and minerals, applied with homemade bamboo and cotton brushes, filling the entire surface with fine detail. While some contemporary artists use synthetic paints, many maintain traditional methods. The art form gained international recognition in the 1960s and has since expanded to various mediums beyond walls, including canvases and textiles. Distinct styles like Kachni (line art), Bharni (filling art), Godna (tattoo art), Tantrik (spiritual), and Kohbar (marriage rituals) exist, each with unique characteristics. Madhubani art holds immense cultural, social, and religious importance, preserving stories, providing livelihood for women artists, and serving as a vibrant expression of India's rich heritage.
