About the Artwork +

This dynamic artwork, titled "The Smile of Mumbai," is a striking example of Madhubani painting by contemporary artist Avinash Karn. Madhubani, or Mithila art, is a traditional folk painting style from Bihar, India, celebrated for its intricate line work, vibrant colors, and symbolic motifs. In this captivating piece, Avinash Karn uses the timeless language of Madhubani to create a vibrant tapestry of stories inspired by the life of filmmaker Amit Deshmukh, who received an International Filmmaker Award after spending twelve years on his project.

The painting pays tribute to Amit's hard work, determination, and commitment to his passion—a journey that drove him away from his home and relationships, yet ultimately brought him the most rewarding experience of his life.

The canvas is a visual narrative of Amit Deshmukh's story, beginning with his roots in a family of fisherfolk. The artist masterfully blends vignettes of daily Mumbai life: the iconic black-and-yellow taxi that carried Amit on his journeys, the local train and metro that connect the city, and the vibrant market life of flower shops and fish sellers. It also honors the city's unique identity with the Dhobi Ghat, Dabbawalas, and the sea with its ships.

The painting captures the small, yet pivotal, moments that defined Amit's journey. It symbolizes his shy past with a rose he couldn't give away and the pivotal friendship that began on a local Mumbai train, where a friend, believing in his future, gifted him a camera. The artwork also depicts the taxi driver's pride in his son's success and the flower seller's tearful joy when her son returns. The quiet comfort Amit finds among the dogs of Juhu Beach is also portrayed. Each scene is interwoven with the city's cultural and spiritual heart, including the popularity of Ganesh Utsav, which pays homage to his friend, Manish Chaudhary, who made films on elephants and Lord Ganesha.

This powerful artwork is a heartfelt tribute to the struggles and triumphs of creative passion. The story, a blend of Avinash Karn's own life and the dedicated work of fellow artists like Dipesh Chandra, transforms the canvas into a living, breathing document. Amidst iconic Victorian-era architecture and towering skyscrapers, a family at a station quietly nods to the many human stories the city holds—including Amit's own journey home.

This piece is a powerful fusion of ancestral technique and contemporary storytelling, celebrating Mumbai's complex, interconnected world and the smiles that make it special. Through this piece, Karn masterfully uses the regional charm of Madhubani art to tell a beautiful life story against the backdrop of glamorous yet challenging Mumbai—a city known for creating and fulfilling dreams. It is a beautiful ode to not only the art of India, but to the unique stories that make the nation so special.

Avinash Karn

Avinash Karn
Avinash Karn is a distinguished Madhubani artist from Ranti, Madhubani, Bihar, who began learning the traditional craft from his family at a young age, inspired by renowned artist Ganga Devi. As a third-generation Madhubani artist, he also holds a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts with a focus on sculpture from Banaras Hindu University. Karn has gained significant international recognition, including an invitation to the Fumetto Comic Festival in Switzerland, where his work was displayed at the Lucerne airport, and he conducted workshops and speaking engagements. He has also exhibited at prestigious venues like the Lalit Kala Academy and the Birla Academy, and received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, which facilitated various workshops. Notably, he contributed to a massive collaborative mural at Azeem Premji University in Bangalore. While maintaining traditional Madhubani styles, Karn explores contemporary subjects like cinema series and cityscapes, investing heavily in research to bring a fresh perspective and avoid common repetitions. Despite early financial struggles as a freelance artist, he leveraged social media to build his network. His ambition extends to preserving and promoting lesser-known Madhubani art forms such as Godna tattoos, Godna paintings, and low-relief paintings, with a goal to research and document their heritage through books.

Madhubani

Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance. Traditionally created by women on walls and floors during auspicious occasions, these paintings depict Hindu mythology, nature, folklore, and daily life, often incorporating Hindu deities, scenes from epics, and natural motifs like flowers and animals. Legend suggests its origins trace back to King Janak's commission for Sita's wedding. Artists traditionally use natural pigments from plants and minerals, applied with homemade bamboo and cotton brushes, filling the entire surface with fine detail. While some contemporary artists use synthetic paints, many maintain traditional methods. The art form gained international recognition in the 1960s and has since expanded to various mediums beyond walls, including canvases and textiles. Distinct styles like Kachni (line art), Bharni (filling art), Godna (tattoo art), Tantrik (spiritual), and Kohbar (marriage rituals) exist, each with unique characteristics. Madhubani art holds immense cultural, social, and religious importance, preserving stories, providing livelihood for women artists, and serving as a vibrant expression of India's rich heritage.
