About the Artwork +
This captivating Gond painting by artist Sukhiram Maravi is rendered in a black-and-white style and depicts a stylized elephant in a Jungle, feeding on the Ghui tree, a drooping fig tree, relishing on its sweet fruits. The artwork is a fine example of the Gond tribal art form from Madhya Pradesh, distinguished by its intricate patterns and its ability to transform natural subjects into a rich, textured composition.
The central figure is a large elephant, which is shown climbing a steep, rocky hill in a jungle. The elephant's body is a complex mosaic of black and white patterns, with different sections filled with dots, stripes, cross-hatching, and other geometric designs. The elephant is reaching up with its trunk, which is curled around a branch of a Ghui tree with large, stylized leaves and sweet fruits.
The elephant’s eye is rendered as a large circle with a prominent pupil, giving the creature a sense of alertness. The ground beneath the elephant is a mix of textures and patterns, with a rocky slope filled with cross-hatching and a grassy area in a different pattern. The entire scene is set against a plain background, which allows the intricate details of the elephant and the tree to be the central focus of the artwork.
This painting by Sukhiram Maravi is a masterful example of his distinct Gond artistic style. It showcases his signature Datari pattern, which features a continuous top line with vertical strokes and a row of dots, and the Torana pattern, composed of graceful semi-circular bands of triangles and dots.
Drawing inspiration from nature and tribal narratives, Maravi uses a monochromatic palette to emphasize the detailed linework and patterns. This powerful and imaginative work is a fantastic representation of the elephant's strength and its relationship with the natural world, all expressed through the unique visual language of the Gond tradition.
