About the Artwork +
This innovative Gond painting by artist Gareeba Tekam presents a fragmented yet cohesive depiction of Lions, showcasing the unique abstract and patterned style characteristic of Gond tribal art. Originating from the indigenous communities of Madhya Pradesh, Gond art is renowned for its intricate dot and dash work that fills the forms, creating rich textures and telling stories rooted in nature and folklore.
The artwork, composed of six creatively arranged individual panels, coalesces into a striking image of lions within their environment. Bold magenta and vibrant yellow backgrounds anchor different sections of the feline forms, while the lions themselves are rendered in shades of dark blue, grey, and olive green. Their bodies are entirely covered in the artist's distinctive "Mayajaal, or Illusion," a signature pattern of repeated elliptical motifs resembling intricate bird feathers, which creates a profound, almost mystical texture and a sense of visual depth and complexity.
Key features like the lions' eyes, depicted as bright white with deep blue pupils, stand out, conveying an alert and watchful presence. Elements like their faces with light grey ruffs and the vibrant orange or blue outlines of their ears and noses add depth and character. The fragmented nature of the composition suggests movement and the elusive grace of these creatures, as if glimpsed through foliage or across a varied landscape.
This painting, with its striking color palette and the artist's masterful use of repetitive patterning, offers a contemporary interpretation of traditional Gond motifs, reflecting the community's deep connection to the wild and their unique way of portraying the animal kingdom.
