About the Artwork +
This striking composition in Himalayan Contemporary Art depicts a highly stylized wrathful offering of the five senses (Drakpo'i Dönyön Nga), a traditional Tibetan Buddhist ritual motif rendered in a modern, graphic aesthetic.
Rooted in shared Himalayan heritage yet shaped by distinct creative voices, this work draws deeply from Buddhist motifs, symbols, and narrative traditions, reinterpreting them through a contemporary visual language that is unmistakably its own, offering a fresh, living continuation of Himalayan artistic heritage rather than a fixed revival of its past forms.
At the center of the composition is a compact, anatomical cluster of uprooted human sensory organs rendered in fleshy tones of pink, cream, beige, and deep maroon, all cleanly defined by bold black outlines. Two wide, stark eyes representing sight stare outward from the upper register, flanked by the curled, symmetrical folds of outer ears signifying hearing. A dark nasal cavity sits at the absolute center to represent smell, while a lower jawbone with prominent white teeth gaps open at the bottom right to expose a lolling tongue for taste. This entire sensory apparatus is rooted into a bulbous, fleshy base that represents the human heart, iconographically understood as the seat of touch and consciousness.
The entire organ cluster is bound within a perfect, deep navy-blue circular void that symbolizes the interior of an inverted skull cup (kapala), a traditional ritual chalice used to hold wrathful offerings. Piercing diagonally through this dark circle is a ritual axis or cord that strings together tiered, decorative oval discs in speckled light blue, patterned yellow, and dotted crimson red, closely resembling sacred ritual cakes (tormas) or jewels.
The central scene is set against a flat, heavily textured metallic gold background that lends the artwork the reflective, sacred quality of a traditional altar piece. The artist introduces a playful, modern contrast with a fluid, minimalist sky-blue ribbon line that snakes horizontally across the lower quadrant. Encased in a simple, natural wood frame, this contemporary execution of a historical theme softens the macabre nature of the subject to highlight its core spiritual metaphor: the complete surrender of the practitioner's ego and the transmutation of worldly sensory illusions into enlightened wisdom.
