This painting, named "Prajna" in Himalayan Contemporary Art by Beelash B. Tamang of Tsal Studio, with calligraphy by K. Tshewang Dorjee, is an acrylic painting built through deliberate repetition, layering two distinct visual systems across a single canvas.
Rooted in shared Himalayan heritage yet shaped by distinct creative voices, this work draws deeply from Buddhist motifs, symbols, and narrative traditions, reinterpreting them through a contemporary visual language that is unmistakably its own, offering a fresh, living continuation of Himalayan artistic heritage rather than a fixed revival of its past forms.
The composition is entirely built through repetition, featuring a base layer composed of a dense, woven grid of small color blocks in ochre, olive, coral, and blue. These small, repeated patterns create a steady, textile-like rhythm that covers the canvas from edge to edge, occasionally interrupted by softer clusters of warm orange and pink that bloom outward like pressure points beneath the surface. Over this woven field, loose, flowing calligraphic script moves freely in dark, looping lines that curve and double back across the canvas, entirely independent of the grid's rigid structure beneath it to bring dynamic movement across the surface.
The contrast between the fixed, repeating pattern and the fluid, gestural script gives the surface a layered depth, the calligraphy appearing to float above the woven ground rather than merge into it. Together, these contrasting elements reflect a profound harmony, beautifully capturing the spiritual balance between structure and freedom.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
