About the Artwork +

In Manoj Tekam's traditional Baiga painting, a woman emerges as a central figure amidst a backdrop that intricately weaves together elements of nature. The significance of nature in Baiga art is prominently displayed as the woman is depicted in harmony with her surroundings, showcasing the deep interconnectedness between humans and the natural world. Every detail in the painting reflects this symbiotic relationship, from the woman's posture mirroring the flow of nearby rivers to the intricate patterns adorning her attire, reminiscent of the flora and fauna that surround her.
Tekam's attention to meticulous detail is evident in the intricate motifs and vibrant colors that bring the painting to life.

The ancient Baiga tribe is indigenous to central India. Many of them can be found in the Mandla district, near Kanha National Park, in Madhya Pradesh. Throughout various phases of their life, Baiga women get tattoos on their head, arms, chest and legs, representing aspects of nature integral to the Baiga way of life and this very same culture is showcased in this artwork.

Manoj Kumar Tekam, a dedicated Gond artist hailing from Dindori, Madhya Pradesh, has been immersed in the vibrant world of Gond art since 2011, learning the intricate techniques from his brother, Bhajju Singh Shyam, a Padma Shree awardee renowned in the field. Keeping the tradition alive within his family, Manoj's daughter and wife also practice Gond art, while his younger brother is currently learning the craft. Despite completing his education up to the 10th grade, Manoj's true passion lies in the mesmerizing strokes of Gond art, which have earned him prestigious awards such as the Rajya Award in Madhya Pradesh and the Kala Rupankar Award in Bhopal, among others.

Manoj's creative journey extends beyond traditional mediums, as he explores innovative avenues to showcase Gond art's timeless charm. From adorning walls and canvases to intricately painting on everyday items like t-shirts, sarees, and coasters, he seamlessly blends traditional motifs with modern narratives. Despite facing language barriers and initial skepticism, Manoj's unwavering determination and belief in his craft have propelled him forward. Inspired by his mentor's perseverance and dedication, Manoj strives to not only excel in his artistic endeavors but also to uplift and inspire budding artists, ensuring that the rich legacy of Gond art continues to flourish for generations to come.

Baiga Art

The ancient Baiga tribe is indigenous to central India. Many of them can be found in the Mandla district, near Kanha National Park, in Madhya Pradesh. They live traditionally, in villages with mud huts and no electricity, completely untouched by modern development. They cook using primitive implements, cultivate and store their own rice, and brew potent toddy from the flowers of the sacred mahua tree. Throughout various phases of their life, Baiga women get tattoos on their head, arms, chest and legs, representing aspects of nature integral to the Baiga way of life and these tattoos are represented in their art as well.
