This spectacular and deeply symbolic nature narrative in Gond by Manoj Tekam presents an extraordinary vertical layout, capturing a sacred forest tree housing a family of nesting birds while its base is anchored by a metamorphic river being.
Gond painting is a vibrant tribal art form from Madhya Pradesh, practiced by the Gond community. It is celebrated for its intricate geometric patterns, bold colors, and deep connection to nature. Traditionally used to decorate village mud walls, the art has evolved into a globally recognized style.
The focal center features a sweeping, central tree trunk rendered in a warm, earthy terracotta hue. This main trunk is filled from base to canopy with a dense, uniform layer of Gehu ke baal (wheat spikes), executed as overlapping rows of fine, seed-like crescent scales. Perched elegantly along the trunk are four vibrant yellow songbirds with striking orange bellies, their feathers detailed with fine concentric ripples. Tucked neatly into the forks of the silver-grey branches are two nests. The entire tree blossoms into three massive, cloud-like leaf clusters packed with thousands of fine, hand-drawn pointillist leaf silhouettes. At the root, the trunk transforms into a large, dark-headed fish with a prominent crescent eye.
The structural layout relies heavily on Manoj Tekam’s signature styles. The thick silver-grey outer branches are molded using the parallel, hand-woven lines of the Beni (braid) pattern, mimicking traditional aesthetics. The fine background canopy and the textured head of the root-fish showcase a masterclass application of Sarson ke daane (mustard seeds). The intense contrast between the bright orange-yellow birds and the monochromatic pointillist foliage brings a pulsing vitality to the frame.
This composition depicts the interconnectedness between the forest and its beings, reflecting on the Gond worldview of harmonious co-existence.
