This exceptional and structurally unique Gond painting by Manoj Tekam explores a layout capturing a single, monumental tree trunk sheltering clusters of wild forest fruit while a lone deer rests at its roots.
Gond painting is a vibrant tribal art form from Madhya Pradesh, practiced by the Gond community. It is celebrated for its intricate geometric patterns, bold colors, and deep connection to nature. Traditionally used to decorate village mud walls, the art has evolved into a globally recognized style.
The composition is vertically anchored by a thick, white-furred central tree trunk that stands out due to a fine, hand-stippled pointillist grain. The main column features three large, deep black circular hollows from which stylized silver branches extend outward. Clustered along these branches and tumbling down the trunk are several deep maroon, berry-like fruit groupings. Resting peacefully at the lower right base is a silver-grey deer, its neck craned backward toward the trunk. Its main flank breaks away from the stippled background, beautifully filled with a clean pattern of large, concentric Gehu ke baal (wheat spikes) scales.
The juxtaposition of patterns highlights Manoj Kumar Tekam's mastery of signature tribal markers. The entire background canopy and the main tree column are meticulously formed by a dense field of Sarson ke daane (mustard seeds), while the parallel lines on the deer's hooves and ears follow the flowing lines of the Beni (braid) custom. Grounded by a detailed root system at the absolute base, this piece delivers a pristine and deeply affecting statement on forest harmony.
This composition depicts the interconnectedness between the forest and its beings, reflecting on the Gond worldview of harmonious co-existence.
