This magnificent and highly vibrant horizontal composition in Gond by Manoj Kumar Tekam documents a peaceful gathering of four mythic stags, their antlers transforming dynamically into a dense network of colorful, leafy branches.
Gond painting is a vibrant tribal art form from Madhya Pradesh, practiced by the Gond community. It is celebrated for its intricate geometric patterns, bold colors, and deep connection to nature. Traditionally used to decorate village mud walls, the art has evolved into a globally recognized style.
The layout features four deer standing in a tight row, facing in alternating directions. The two outer stags are rendered in a solid, vibrant emerald-green tone, their hides fully coated in a fine-grain pattern of Sarson ke daane (mustard seeds). Interlocking between them are two highly stylized stags; one is rendered in a deep ochre yellow and the other in a brilliant crimson red. The bodies of these central deer are entirely textured with Gehu ke baal (wheat spikes), shown as repeating rows of tightly nested crescent loops tracking their long necks. Rising from each of their heads is a thick, coral-like tree branch that bursts into a series of delicate orange, yellow, and red hand-drawn leaves.
The texturing showcases an incredible breakdown of the artist's signature lexicon. The thick, vertical tree branches rising from the deer crowns are structured with long, flowing vertical lines of the Beni (braid) pattern, beautifully contrasting with the pointillist stippling on the green deer hides. Placed against a clean white backdrop, this borderless artwork achieves a modern, graphic clarity while honoring historic Gond traditions.
This composition depicts the interconnectedness between the forest and its beings, reflecting on the Gond worldview of harmonious co-existence.
